Tom, I graduated 10 years after you. Our class had a 10-year reunion that almost kept us from having any more. At the 10-year, there was a lot of snooty-ness and posturing; At the 20-year, and from then on, it's been all about "Nice to see ya! How ya been?" Our class had a get-together for the 25-year, the 30 year, the 35 year, and the year everyone turned 55...and this year, when everyone turned [or will turn] 60, we had a "senior" Prom on board the Belle of Louisville...same place we had our junior prom in high school. We've got a 45-year reunion coming up in 2017, so we're already working on some of the details.

We've found that we get more participation when we just have a cook-out at a big camp owned by one of the churches in the area. It's informal, we usually start around 1 pm, and go until the last person leaves [last time that was at 10 pm]. Since some folks can't make it in the afternoon, while others can't make it at night, we try to accommodate everyone's schedule that way. We don't intentionally exclude anyone, but out of a class of 117 [10 of whom have passed away], we get a turnout of 40-45 classmates every time...and it's not always the same people.

One classmate who lives in Florida came to our "senior" Prom, the first reunion he's ever attended...and before the night was over he was asking himself why he didn't come and join us before. Our group gets along because there's been a lot of kindness and forgiveness over the years. Most of us realize that any unkindness back in high school can be forgiven, because life goes on. Holding a grudge from high school [or grade school, as my brother still does] is like drinking poison, and then expecting the other person to die...and most of us understand that.

Today's Featured Article - The 8N and the Fox - by Zane Sherman. Dec. 13 1998, Renfroe, Alabama. Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
