There are 2 valve, 4 valve, and turbo engines.
There are at least 3 SAE bell housings as well as small truck bell housings.
The engine block can be built with blower opening facing left or right. That affects all the other accessories.
There may be half a dozen governors.
I have four 4-53's. They are all different. I'd estimate the cost to rebuild one today would be at least $5000 if given to a DD reman dealer. Others will just install kits, bearings, rebuilt injectors, and recondition the head. BTW, a dealer will usually throw the head away. I've seen hundreds of them in a dumpster behind Power Products Inc in Lynnfield, MA.
Studebaker was the first truck to run the 4-53. Alot of delivery vans (Chevy maybe) also ran them. I got one out of a GMC school bus and put it in a '47 KB-5 International. Many water pumps, generators, air compressors, welders, forklifts, and construction equipment were equipped with them. 3-53's as well.
$1500 is a good price if rebuilt by a competent person.
