I was in the business of building trailers for many years and I would say they are semi effective. I think they adjust up some but rarely enough so you don't need to adjust them sometimes. If you use your trailer a lot, like using up a set of brakes every other year or so that would be better. If your brakes last 5 to 10 years they will likely rust solid and not work after a couple of years or so. I've also heard of some people having problems with them over adjusting, but I've never seen that. I always bought them, but frequently had to adjust up brakes manually when doing maintenance.
