25 years ago, when I was planning construction on my mountain, I put the outbuildings a quarter mile down. Returning to the house is equivalent to climbing a 10 story building, twice per day. When feeling energetic, I walk down to the pavement, half a mile with 400 foot elevation change. Beautiful place to take a small hike, easy enough my knees don"t complain.
Apparently a good plan, I"m far healthier than my sedentary siblings. Met up with some old hiking buddies last June in the Alps. Great hiking, and I wasn"t the slow one. Was just like the travel brochures show.
