I've got a $400 Canon that gave me an error code 5 (a common failure with the Canon cameras) and I had used it for less than 100 photos. The warranty had expired by about a month. It cost $199, plus shipping, for the fix and they tried several times to get me to "trade up for a better model" while I was getting the details for the fix. No way, no how would they stand behind it. Before you buy a camera, get the low-down on the factory warranty, and although I'm normally against them, consider the extended warranty.
