I assume "some play at the crankshaft" means you can rotate the flywheel without hearing or feeling any resistance for the first bit? If so, I would suspect wear on the small ends, or a worn crank. If these machines are run low on oil, the oil slinger rings on either end of the crank have nothing to pick up and the rods and pistons will run dry, with the usual results. Other than that, the locking bolts and nuts holding down the valves may be slack allowing the valves to move around in the head. You won"t know until you tear it down. Everything on this pump is rebuildable; whether it"s cost effective to do so is another matter. It"s an excellent pump though, absolutely top quality, good up to 7.5hp, maybe even 10 if you push it.
