dovetec corn stove

We are new to the country and considering buying a second hand deovetec stove and apparently the auger is not working. This could apparently be due to the thermostat, would you please be able to shed some light and suggestions as to what it may require? It is going cheap and they claim all else works....but how would they know if the corn does not feed. Our gas bill was $600 this month, our first month here, and we need to do something, quick! thanks a lot Connie
