About 1200 taps. The pump seemed to have plenty of capacity. I don't use a vacuum regulator, but open a bleed valve until the vacuum drops to the level that I want to run at. That way if something starts leaking I will see a drop in vacuum. If I used a regulator it would just keep opening up until the whole capacity of the pump was being used before anything would show on the guage. I don't think those old pumps should be run at maximum possible vacuum. Mine will pull 21 inches if it is closed right up, but I run it at 16-17 inches. I used the generic vacuum pump oil that my farm machinery dealer sells from a 55 gallon drum, don't know what brand. Instead of a muffler I have about 100 feet of unperforated "elephant gut" drain pipe, this keeps the oil vapor away from my sap storage. The drawback to this is a little too much back pressure, I have to keep a weight on the oil fill plug to keep it from blowing out. This spring I bought an oil reclaimer at an auction, and I am going to try to hook that up for next year.

Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects.
