It does sound like a timing issue. follow Kelly B's instructions for timing. If it is firing and trying to run backwards it is not an issue of not having enough spark. I have 3 of these engines. I was trying to start one at a show one time and was not having much luck. Guy walks up to me and said his Daddy told him that was the only engine he ever saw that there was nothing wrong with but you couldn't get them to run. I believe him. i started an LA last week that had not been run since Sept. Started first crank. Book says 3/4 turn out on the needle.
