Send Email link not showing?

We are no longer allowing non-YT visitors to access the Send Email button on the posts. That means if you use a guest username or don't have a login cookie present, the Send Email won't appear. This has been a long time in coming because spammers have often used the send email link to send messages of a less than honorable nature.

For some people who were logged in, they were still not seeing the Send Email. It turns out I had a bug where usernames with some special characters were being ignored in that check (Thanks to Bob B for pointing this out). One of the special characters was the not-so-special "space", so that impacted a lot of folks. If you have an really unusual characters in your username, it still may cause this to happen for you too. If so, just contact me and let me know.

One other reason why the Send Email link may not show up for you, is if your login cookie wasn't written correctly. You will know this if the Name: box isn't automatically filled in with your username, or if the username filled in is incorrect. The solution for that is to use the Login Status link to log out, then put your username and password in on the next post.

If you use a guest username, I'd recommend you delete your "guest" cookie and put a password on it so it registers with a password cookie. There is no difference in your anonymity using a guest username, the guest access is only there to allow new people who have difficulties with computers to still be able to ask questions.

Today's Featured Article - What Oil Should I Use? - by Francis Robinson. I keep seein this question pop up over and over again in discussion groups all over the web. As with many things there are often several right answers and a few wrong ones. Some purist I'm sure will disagree to no end with what I will tell you but most of us out here in the real world don't really care do we ? Some of them only bring their noses down out of the air long enough to look down them anyway. If you are like me you are only doing this old tractor stuff because you enjoy it. You ...
