The synchros are on the top shaft. They help select high (3,5,7,8); low(1,2,4,6); and reverse. A top shaft overhaul requires a single split in front of the transmission and removing the hitch cover. The ranges are not synchronized and are selected on the bottom (pinion) shaft. A bottom shaft overhaul requires removal of both axles and differential, as well as the top shaft. Can't remember if the bottom shaft shifter cam can be removed with the top shaft and its shift cam already out, but I think so.
