I just bought a 1950 (?) S/A Industrial tractor. When I jack up the left rear, I can pull the tire, wheel and axle assembly in and out more than one inch. What is supposed to hold it in place?
All of this slop in the system has apparently allowed the bull gear to drift out and down, wearing a slot in the pan. When I pulled the pan, it was dry, with lots of metal shavings, and a washer (presumably the inner bearing retainer washer that they warn you to be careful about during reassembly).
If the bearings have been run dry and fed a diet of metal shavings, I assume that I will have to replace them. What about the bull gear and pinion? If I rinse them in kerosene are they likely to still be okay?
There is someone locally parting out a Farmall A. If I need replacement axle and reduction unit parts, will those off of an A fit on a S/A Industrial?
Incidentally, this tractor was advertised as being in "excellent condition." I guess the joke is on me.
