When doing a compression test I remove all the spark plugs and crank it over and check each cylnder. When I do a cylnder leak down test I back off the rocker arm and put air in to the cylnder and see what it holds to see if its getting by the valves or going other places. Many things can be solved by simple tests. At work we have injectors we hook air to to find problems and well as bore scopes to look into cylnders before a major tear down.
