If the flexable fuel line that goes to the fuel pump is cracked and sucking air it may not be a bad fuel pump.
I put an electric fuel pump on my 51 Ford with the flat head engine and left the original one on the engine. You know that they are bad about vapor locking. Now when it vapor locks or sits for a long time and the original pump dries out I just turn on the electric fuel pump with a toggle switch I mounted under the edge of the dash board and pump her up and start it up then turn off the electric pump and I'm on my way.
I also installed a separate 12 volt battery with a separate solenoid and a push button starter switch and if it tries to give me static when starting hot etc. I just turn on the ignition and hit the 12 volts and away I go!
