Re-reading my last post, it sounds a bit harsh. The point I was trying to make is that I have the minimum vehicle that still meets my needs, a small SUV that gets 20 mpg. It pulls my boat, my utility trailer, and gets my family around. But I mostly drive it with just me in it. Most everyone I know is the same way and some of them actually need a 13 mpg truck to do the job.
I've travelled quite a bit and I've seen what can be achieved in other parts of the world. A 3.0L turbodiesel Toyota Hilux gets about 30 mpg and still has the stones to pull a 2 ton boat across the Australian continent. A Mercedes turbodiesel will do 140+ mph on the Autobahn and still gets 32 mpg when driven normally on the highway. Performance and economy are not mutually exclusive, but for some strange reason the Hilux is not available here. I'd have one in a heartbeat if it was. The Mercedes is $52K and not geared appropriately to pull my bass boat, although that would be quite a sight.
