There are two types of Bendix, the new style on the right and the old-original style on the left.
You probably have the old style with a spring.
To remove the Bendix you have to compress the Bendix back toward the start and remove the pin #20.
I use two bar clamps place around the starter and over the end of the Bendix. A third clamp will hold the two clamps on the Bendix if they start to slide off. You only need to push the Bendix back about 1/8". Then you can tap the pin out with a drift. Once the pin is out, remove the clamps and the Bendix will slide off. Reverse to install.
