just my 2 cents worth I am no expert but about 5 yrs ago before finding this great site I put fuel filters in both 8ns (just because).5 yrs. and I never had any trouble with either of them. But I have noticed that after turning on the gas if the fuel filter is dry no fuel moves untill you crank it over but causes no problem.Interesting though I had a 52 8n with no filter, twice I ran it out of gas and both times it wouldn't start and no gas would move in sedement bowl untill I loosend the fitting at the carb.My 46 2n has no filter and 2 wks ago I posted about a fuel problem I had, turned out to be dirt in the main jet I changed the screen in bowl and a new elbow in the carb but neither looked bad.
