Take them back and get the ones already made up. If you do not make a good connection you will always have a problem. The gage of stranded wire is a function of the actual cross section of the conductor material not the diameter. The strands can be assembled tightly on not so tightly and still be the same gage. You may see words like compact strand or compact round for the same gage of wire. They have a slightly different diameter.
