The voltage on the front mounted coil with the points closed should be around 3.5 volts. Of course the battery voltage would appear if the points were open. Employing an 8 volt battery, is more trouble than it is worth. The voltage regulator could be adjusted with a lot of trial and error. A lot of tractors including mine remain 6 volts and start and operate just fine. Mine starts on the second turn of the starter. Most people change to a 12 volt system for the wrong reason. A 12 volt system is more fault tolerant than a 6. If a 6 volt system is kept in good order, it functions well. The only reason I have ever heard of that could justify changing to 12 volts, is that someone wanted to use his/her battery for running a sprayer... 6 volt systems can also be jumped from a 12 volt battery, provided it is done correctly. That is an other subject. Happy Motoring Claus
