I've thought about making something similar to a reciever hitch on a pickup, spanning the fender mounts. Has anyone come up with a better design, more like the aftermarket hitch at a reasonable price?
Yes. The picture below is the receiver for a quick attach loader that I had on my 9N at one point. The 8N version bolted on using the drawbar holes in the bottom of the differential housing. This 9N version uses two semi-circular brackets that attach using the bottom 5 trumpet attaching studs. I have contemplated using that design to make a 9N drawbar mount to add to my product line. The brackets would be CNC laser cut from 5/16" plate and quite sturdy and the regular 8N mount would bolt to them in exactly the same way it bolts to the 8N. I would expect it to be modestly priced assuming the parts nest well for the laser cutter. If interested I'll draw it up and ship it off for a quote from the laser shop. In fact I may do that anyway since I think they would be quite popular. Give me a call if you want.
