The 8N brakes adjust just like conventional automobile brakes. You insert a brake adjusting tool(or a bent screwdriver)in the slot and rachet the adjuster wheel either way to get the desired drag. I wouldn't have any idea how the adjuster slot and adjusting screw could not be lined up, unless someone did some serious remodeling.The brake shoes should be on top and bottom and the adjuster should be vertical, aligned with the adjuster hole.
