David, IMO you did your starter no harm by a single event of pressing the starter with out depressing the clutch. Depressing the clutch just takes some of the extra drag off the starter by eliminating the transmission main drive gear rotation and anything that might be hooked up to the pto. It is also another safety. I've started my Jubilee and N many times over last 20 some years with not pushing the clutch. You do not say if the tractor is stock 6 volt or modified. You do say it "clicks". What "clicks"? The starter or the solenoid? Is it possible that the "click" is spark jumping? Might try jumping directly to the starter. MAKE SURE THE TRACTOR IS OUT OF GEAR. If you jump directly to the starter with no action then you do have a starter problem. Good luck, ray
