Don't know if you know it or not, but the largest quake ever recorded in the world happened at Cape Giradeu(sp) Missouri back about 1812. Made the Mississippi river run backwards and dry up in some spots. They figure on today's scale it would have registered between a 9 and a 10. One of my Taylor ancestors left TN for MO in 1812 when he was a teenager. Swam the Miss river on horseback. He recorded his trip and referred to the "Earth's great shaking" that happened shortly after his arrival in MO.
