I don't think I would use "Ball joint" grease in your gear box, I'm not sure it would hold up from the stress and heat? I would have thought Dell would have answered this question with specs from his BMW and Boeing Manuals ! LOL
If your haveing problems with a leaky seal, Woods sells a real thick gear box oil, it's allmost like a low temp grease. hope this helps later,dave
