It is mostly on 6V to 12V conversions BUT 8V is also mentioned. Going to 8V has the same reasons as going to 12V generally, so I think all the comments are germaine to your question.

My one comment to add would be to say, he is a MECHANIC, yes? Not an electrician, so his understanding of his "quick fix" may be lacking - he just knows that it seem to work.
