Dave, I have an 8N that was having starter problems recently. When I first looked at it, I also thought that the transmission had to be split to remove the starter, but I was wrong. If you look at the front end of the starter you should see two 7/16" bolt heads. These are long bolts that run the full length of the starter and into the transmission housing. Once you remove these bolts the starter will come off. By the way, I had my starter rebuilt by a local shop and I installed a newer clutch style bendix, it works like a charm and the bendix does not kick out before the engine starts. Good Luck, Pete
