Yes a lot of them were filled with grease. But the grease gets hard and the gears just channel in it and basicly don't stay lubricated. There is a product sold by Farm Lube that is called (I think) Liquid gear grease. Comes in qt. bottles or grease tube. It does not leak out of a gear box without any seals and hangs on to gears like it was magnetic. It is gray in color and has a graphite look to it. You would not need to fill that whole cavity with this fluid. If you packed gun grease in below the secter gear and filled the open area, then you could fill the space where the bearings, worm and secter gear mesh with this product and you would have lubrication for the next decade.
