I happened on your post here, I usually am on The H.Ferguson forum board. I think the answers for your tractor are: The thumbscrew adjustment you spoke of is actually the power adjustment. Adjust this to 1 1/4 turn open, then fine adjust 1/16 turn at a time while under load. The tractor should run slightly rich, as the fuel provides some cooling for the valves by design. Under no circumstance operate at 1 turn or less, this will destine you for a valve job in the near future. The idle adjustment has a screwdriver slot in it, and should be adjusted after reaching operating temperature. I recommend using a carb., gas line cleaner mixed proportionally for the 10gal. tank, too much is not better! Consider buying a owners manual from a MF dealer, it's thin and packed with info.
