5 years ago I contacted ARP tech assistance about tensioning lubrication. They had qualified engine fasteners with two types of lubrication, 10W30 oil and assembly lube, both with hardened steel washers under the nuts. The assembly lube is not exotic, basically nothing more than commonly available anti-seize in paste or stick form. It is available from a number of suppliers, including most auto parts, and will provide more uniform tensioning than straight oil. If lead or copper washers are being used solely for lubrication, a throwback from 60 years ago, there certainly have been improvements in tensioning since that time. All performance engine suppliers use an assembly anti-seize lubricant for stud or bolt tensioning. As an engine builder recently told me...it does make a difference. For what its worth, probably not be much, for both racing engines and my old tractors, I use assembly lube with hardened washers.

Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects.
