The manual also says the clutch is to be ALWAYS engaged when engine is running. Take it out of gear & engage it. Always. There are two reasons for this. First is SAFETY. If a floating disk breaks in half- and they do- it will lodge between the drive disks & engage the clutch without warning & with no way to stop. This DOES happen. The tractor takes off in whatever gear the operator has it in, VERY dangerous- deadly. The second reason is to avoid massive wear on the clutch bearing, clutch bushing, & Crankshaft. It also wears the locator pin due to rattling around. I cringe walking around shows & seeing all the 2 cyl JD's idling away, with the clutch disengaged ;-(
