I would not say they are "Rare" but there isn't a lot of them around either. This is part of an article in Two-Cylinder Magazine a few years ago about the unstyled JD Model B that explained the 4 bolt pedestal:
"On Model "B" and "B" Garden ("BN") Tractors serial numbers
1000-3042, the front-end support was a fabricated steel weldment assembly that used four bolts (actually studs and nuts) to attach the steering pedestal assembly. A few field failures of this design had already occurred, and since a "BW" Tractor was planned, it was determined that the fabricated steel front-end support and 4-bolt attachment of the steering pedestal would not be strong enough
to withstand the stresses that would be imposed with the
adjustable-front axle. Therefore, at #3043, the front-end support was changed to a heavier cast iron unit, and the steering pedestals were revised to use eight bolts (again, studs and nuts) for attachment
instead of four."
So that means there were 2042 made. I have a 4 bolt B and it's probably my favorite tractor. Hope this helps.
