"JD 318 SOLENOID OR FLY WHEEL". MY FIRST POSTING WAS BACK IN JAN.TELLING OF THE SOUNDS THE STARTER MAKES.WELL,IT HAS BEEN 6 MONTHS AND MY PROBLEM HAS COME TO A HEAD. I CLEANED UP WITH GUNK ENGINE CLEANER ALL AROUND THE STARTER AND THE RELAY. A WEEK LATER IT WOULDN'T START. THE BATTERY TEST BAD AND WAS 6 YEARS OLD SO I REPLACED IT. NOW THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH BURN AND THE STARTER WOULD NOT MAKE A SOUND. I TAPPED ON THE BOTTOM PART(IS THAT THE SOLENOID) AND TRIED AGAIN TO START IT . THIS TIME I COULD HEAR THE SOLENOID CLICK, BUT NO STARTER SOUND. LOOKING AT THE ENDS OF THE SOLENOID THE BIG HOT RED CABLE FROM THE BATTERY CONNECTS AND A SMALL RED WIRE GOING TO THE RELAY CONNECT TO THE BOTTOM LUG, TO THE LEFT OF THAT A PURPLE WIRE HAS A PUSH ON CONNECTOR COMING FROM THE RELAY.I GUESS THE RED WIRE ALLOWS THE CURRENT TO PASS THE RELAY WHEN IT IS MADE AND CARRY CURRENT TO THE SOLENOID, TURNING IT ON, ENGAGING THE STARTER OR THE STARTER SHIFT LEVER ENGAGES THE FLYWHEEL. IS THIS CORRECT ????????? JUST ABOVE AND TO THE RIGHT IS THE OTHER BIG LUG. THERE IS A FUNNY COPPER BRAIDED SHORT NON-INSULATED WIRE THAT IS LOOSE AND SEEMS TO GO NO WHERES. THAT IS THIS???? IS THIS A FUSE?

I REMOVED THE RELAY AND WILL REPLACE IT TOMORROW.

LOOKING THE PARTS UP AT JOHN DEERE I FIND THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF STARTERS. BENDIX TYPE AND THE SOLENOID TYPE. I THINK MINE IS THE SOLENOID TYPE.
HELP! IF YOU HAVE A REPAIR MANUAL HELP! I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START TO PULL THE ENGINE.
