I strongly recommed changing the harmonic balancer at the suggested hours. A friend of mine didn't, the balancer failed, and the engine was severely damaged. I'm not experienced on these larger engines, just passing along the experience of a friend. Detroit Diesel also recommeds changing it "at time of normal major engine overhaul, regardless of apparent condition" and "inspect periodically and replace if dented or leaking".
