The last time I blew snow I watched the entire time to see what might be happening. So of course, nothing happened and I blew the entire driveway out... The key did walk out a bit at one point, but I was able to notice it before it flew out and avoided shearing the bolt. I think I was also more careful to lift the blower only as high as necessary, instead of just pulling the hitch lever to max and driving away. When warmer months come I think I'll weld that key in there - hoping that will fix most of my problems.
