Don't be scared off by those that say how hard a no-till planter pulls. All you are doing is opening a slit in the ground 1 inch wide and about 1 and 1/2 inches deep, then filling it back up for each row planted. How much power can that take?
The first time I planted any no-till back in the late sixties, the largest tractor I had was a Ford 860. There was talk of how hard a planter pulled and a four row unit required a sixty HP tractor. The 860 pulled it easily in fourth gear at 1500 RPMs at four+ MPH as that was the recomended speed.
I have a neighbor who uses a 4600 Ford with a six row no-til and leaves his 5000 sitting in the shed. Says he just likes the 4600 better. Joe
