I always just take a large punch and a two pound hammer and hit the yoke on the side in the direction that will thread it off. Usually they will come loose with just a few hard hits. If it is still stubborn. Take a large hammer and hold it under one side of the yoke and hit the opposite side with another hammer. The jar will loosen them up too.
I have never had to take the gear case apart to get a shaft off.
