Sometimes you get really lucky.

Bought a JD No. 3 sickle mower through an eBay auction last week.

Nancy and I drove to Pocahontas, AR last Saturday to get it.

Young man we bought it from said it belonged to his late uncle a well-known local veterinarian.

Said that they pulled it out of the uncle"s barn late December to take a few photos.

Young man"s wife encouraged him to sell the mower on eBay rather than haul it to the scrap yard.

After loading it on the trailer, I inspected the mower a little closer.

Of course the pitman was broken as with 99% of all old mowers.

The pulley was free and turned very easy by hand.

The tilt lever was free and actually tilted the cutter bar both backward and forward.

To my surprise the transport rod was still connected to a piece of the original tongue and the cutter bar.

Another surprise was that the tail nut was still attached to the transport rod.

Decided to remove the tail nut and transport rod so as not to loose either during the trip home.

A small shot of WD40 on the square nut securing the transport rod eye bolt and the nut came loose by hand.

Best of all I was able to turn the tail nut under the cutter bar and remove it with no WD40!

Got my eye on two of Nancy's horses that can pull the mower.

Will replace the knife sections and pitman, apply some grease, and it should be good for another 70 years or so.

Today's Featured Article - Madison's County - by Anthony West. Philip Madison has been a good friend of mine for quite some time. He has patiently suffered my incessant chit chat on the subject of tractors for longer than I care to remember, and on many occasions he has put himself out, dropped what ever it was he was doing, to come and lend a hand cranking handles, or loading a find onto a trailer. Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects. ... [Read Article]
