I have used the type cutter bar that you are talking about for several years and yes they will break once in a while especially in small grains like wheat. Normally the problem is the guards are worn out when they break. One needs to look at the ledger part of the guard and if that sharp flat surface is worn and rounded they need to be changed. They work great in soybeans as you can drive as fast as the combine's capacity and that is what they were disigned to do.
