This is Cameron’s first time running a combine. I more or less raised Cameron, he chose old tractors over the alternative and he has done very well in life because of it. A new wife and then a family have kept him busy but he made it out to help with wheat binding today for the first time in many years. The IHC “H” is the first tractor he ever bought; a friend is driving it because Cameron is operating the binder. He paid for the H with his own money and over hauled the engine, he asked for my help but never money. I could tell he wanted to run the combine but I also knew he wouldn’t ask. I offered to take the first load of wheat to the elevator and told Cameron he could run the combine. I told him to put gas in it and gave him basic instructions which I knew he would follow without question. My sister went to the elevator with me and she told me thanks for letting Cameron run the combine, he had been on one foot and then the other talking about how much fun it would be to run it. When we returned Cameron was hanging upside down on the top of the machine throwing straw out of the straw walkers, a huge pile of straw surrounded the combine. The straw chopper belt had come off and it was plugged front to back. He was certain it was his fault (I could have run the machine the rest of the day and it wouldn’t have come off but … let someone new run it) the 4296 was just giving “the new guy” a lesson in cutting wheat. When the belt came off it scarred the side of the machine and he was worried I would be mad. It is the mark of a farm machine doing its job. Cameron got back in the 4296 to finish the job … well almost. Making the last round he had a strip of wheat 100 feet long and 6 foot wide left to cut when he ran out of fuel at the far end of the field; where else would you run out of gas? I looked at the gas cans, they were full. He is never going to hear the end of this. He wanted to put the 4296 away for the year, he had earned it. I will try to post video of him running the machine later.
