Hi ... been around MF combines all of my life. Between my dad and I we have had about nine of them. I farm small too. Had a MF 410 for a couple of years and bought a late model MF 550 last year. A MF 410 is a bigger machine than the MF 540. The cylinder width is the same but a MF 410 flares out about 6 inches on each side behind the beater for more straw walker and chaffer/sieve square inches. The 540 is not much of a combine especially in heavy corn and hills. They have a hard time selling them in Iowa. One last fall brought $1000 on a farm sale and it ran and looked good. I know of a dealer that has had one sitting on his lot for 3 - 4 years too ... piece of junk. I know a farmer here that had a MF 540 ... he said he combined part way up the hill and backed down quickly to get the corn through the sieves. Honest! They use some similar drive styles as the MF 300. Good luck ... sitting in the rain and snow doesn't help.
