I have a Sears Custom 600 that I am restoring. I bought it from a friend at work in the mid 80"s for 100.00 and it ran well except for minor problems. Since then I"ve moved a number of times and there wasn"t the need for this size tractor so I stored it (always indoors) and it looks pretty good for it"s age. I like the heavy construction of the unit compared with the thin sheet metal things that they seem to sell these days. I have 3 manuals that I can copy & share with others if needed (for the postage). They are; Op.Instructions / parts list for Model # 917.9951 & 9950 Electric & Recoil Starter 36" Rotary Mower Attachment # 917.62606 Owners Man. Craftsman Engine # 143.546082 (What"s the techumseh model #?) I"m attaching a link to pictures of the tractor for those interested ... I have a couple of questions about parts, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 1. The stator part of the magneto has some damage and the coil plastic is scuffed. (I think the clip must have disengaged while it was running.) I think it will still run but would like to replace it while I"ve got it apart. Sears has this part (magneto assy. or stator) as no longer available. Is there a substitute or does anyone know where I can get one? A picture of the damage can be found at the link below. 2. The starter generator always worked but the ammeter never showed a charge and the battery would die. Can it be repaired? Not sure of the voltage regulator. 3. I"ve had to replace the head gasket twice (back when it was used regularly). Is there a common cause for this? (Note: the former owner installed a bracket between a head bolt and the air cleaner for support. 4. Where is the best place to look for accessories for this unit? I would like to eventually have at least the most common ones you could get: Cat. #9959 Bundle#626x14 Three point hitch Cat. #9960 Bundle#626x6 Pair of Rear Wheel Weights Cat. #9921 Bundle # 626x11 Dual Wheel Spacers Tires Rear p/n 3992H # 600x12 Extra tire set (or spares) No longer avail. from Sears Tubes R p/n 1296H1 # 600x12 Extra tubes Rims R p/n 1297H1 Rims for dual rear wheels I understand there were accessories such as a plow, snow blower, aerator etc. Where these specific to this model or are they generic for most garden tractors? For all those that contribute & share such useful information on this site... Thank you!
