JD had just entered the consumer tractor market at that time, so the JD would be more buggy. The JD would have more problems than the Gravely, for Gravely has been building consumer tractors for years. The Gravely has more stuff to go wrong, but in my experience the engines have more problems than the tractors. Gravelys are built to last. It actually more depends on what you will be doing. If you are just going to be mowing, buy the JD, if you want to do more, buy the Gravely.
