I have a JD 318 with a onan b43g that I bought from a fella that was experiencing the same thing you did. He finally got fed up with always fixing things and sold it to me. He told me that it was his dad's tractor and when his dad died he got it from his mom in exchange for mowing her grass. I tore it apart and found mud caked inside everywhere you could imagine.[even under the foam of the seat] I asked him if it was ever in a flood or under-water, which he didn't know but his mom thought that her husband bought it from a fella that lived by the river. Long story and many repairs later, the only thing that you may be able to do is the same thing. tear it all apart and clean everything. The tractor has been fine for me, but the motor now needs a overhaul at only 2000 hours. I put on 1000 of these hours with only a few new parts.
