You should look for a wire that goes from your switch to your solenoid. Usually when you make an attempt to start either by twisting a key or pushing a starter button voltage is fed to your solenoid causing the bendix drive to engage your ring gear on your flywheel. You should only have voltage to your solenoid when making a start. Check for a wire from your switch to your solenoid have a helper to make an attempt to crank over the engine once you find the wire. Use your volt meter to check for voltage when the helper try's to crank over the engine. If there no voltage you may have a broken wire between the switch and solenoid. You're bypassing your starter switch when you jumper the solenoid. Run a separate wire from your battery to where your wire from the switch is connected and just touch it to see if the engine cranks.
