Check for grass,leaves or mouse nest in flywheel & cooling fins causeing eng to overheat,also check driven loads(mower deck bearings,trans)that may be overloading eng & causeing overheating,other things to check,flywheel key,may be bent/sheared & changeing ign timing,dirt/water in carb bowl & internal passages causeing eng to run too lean or a worn intake valve guide,scored cyl wall/rings & compression low or head gasket may have been leaking causeing low compression,if you can't find anything wrong in carb & looking over eng,install a new head gasket & do a leakdown test on eng,this may showup wear problems you can't see.If you need a service/repair manual for eng goto link below & see if manual avail as a free download.
