Finally looked at and drove the infamous 3 cyl 4000. Tach and hour meter worked, is the left gauge the fuel and the right gauge the temp?
yes to both
Is left light the charging system?
yes
If the generator is working should it go out?
yes
Is the right light the oil pressure?
yes
Should it be on before starting and go off after starting?
yes, out within 30 seconds
The fuel was very low and very old. Battery not the best. Tractor started hard, gave it a shot of ether and then it ran OK.
Avoid ether whenever possible, especially if the glow plug is operable, which should be on the start switch to the left rather than right turn, turn left for pre-heat, turn right for hot start, glowplug located in the intale manifold with a thermal valve, and fuel line
Started hot OK. Is the proper cold starting procedure, fuel lever at idle and then crank till it starts?
I personally give full throttle til start then down to idle, but use what works for your machine.
Still trying to decide how many more problems I need!
