Hi, I have a '53 model ford 850 tractor that has been converted to 12 volt. The solenoid that was on the tractor was a three post (2 large and 1 small), a wire ran from the small post on the solenoid to the starter push switch on top of the transmission to keep the tractor from starting in gear.
I've had to replace the solenoid and a mechanic friend of mine said I would most likely have to get a 4 post solenoid but that I needed to be sure and get one that was insulated where a hot wire from the key switch would provide power to one of the small post on the solenoid and a wire from the other small post would then go to the starter button. This was the only way to insure that starting in gear was not possible.
Has anyone ever seen a solenoid like what is described above? My buddy is extremely knowledgeable about electrical systems on cars and tractors, he told me that the auto parts could get me one but nobody there seems to know what I'm talking about. Would it be better to just replace the solenoid with a three post or would a four post provide some benefit that I'm missing. If a four post would be better where in the world can I find one.
