A trick I've used is to put a magnet in an old cotton glove finger and leave it inside the sediment bowl - the rust sticks to the magnet and doesn't clog the carb. No reason why you can't use the same trick inside the tank - just add a bit of string or wire to get the thing out later. Easier than cleaning out the tank if the tank isn't too bad.
