From your post I'm assuming that it has the 23C diesel. I've got one as well. The rings are shot in mine and I plan on doing a rebuild this winter. Mine does have what I consider a lot of blow by out the breather tube. I wished I had done a leak down test on it when I had it tore apart this past winter. I will do a leak down before I pull it apart just for kicks and giggles. I would check to make sure the breather/blow-by tube is not restricted in any way. If it is, you could be building pressure in the crankcase at which point the oil will get blown out anywhere it can find a path. This will involve removing the fuel tank , removing the valve cover and snaking the line. One you have the valve cover off you can adjust the valves while your there. You can get just valve cover gasket from this site, you will need to call them though. PN is S.42393 (Sparex) Equivalent 829029M1.
With mine when cold I give it about 30 seconds of glow plug heat and it starts right up, once it's up to operating temperature it will generally start without heat.
I also believe the exhaust pipe and muffler are to small for this engine Mine has has what I consider a high exhaust velocity exiting the tail pipe from the muffler. If you put your hand over the inlet of the air cleaner you can feel it pulsing positive and negative. When I have it down I plan to address that as well.
Once you get the pictures posted up someone should be able to point you in the right direction.
