The hyd pump is operated by the PTO shaft. There are cam type lobes on the shaft that move the pistons inside the pump housing. I could not figure out how a square peg could fit in a round hole. Now I know. It's not really. While I have been researching options to get my Ferguson System/Draft Control back in operation I would notice pump repair kits. They call this square a piston. I thought it must have been a misprint or something. Nope, the pistons are on the outside of the square. I think it goes like this, PTO in gear, clutch engaged, PTO shaft rotates, cams on the PT shaft move the squares in and out, which is moving the piston in and out. Genius!
